Rare Domestic and Wild Animals of Pakistan

Pakistan is home to remarkable biological diversity, spanning ecosystems from the Himalaya–Karakoram–Hindukush region to rangelands, wetlands, forests, and coastal areas. These environments support rare domestic animal genetic resources and endangered wildlife, including yak, camel, Indus river dolphin, markhor, and snow leopard—vital to ecological balance and food security. In this context, the proposed International Symposium on Rare domestic and Wild Animals of Pakistan: Integrating Genomics, Biodiversity Conservation, and Food Security aims to provide a dedicated national and international platform for scientific dialogue, capacity building, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The symposium will bring together researchers, conservationists, livestock and wildlife experts, genomic scientists, policymakers, development partners, and students to review the current status of rare domestic species (such as yak and camel) and threatened wildlife (including Indus dolphin, markhor, snow leopard, musk deer, reptiles, and vultures). It will also showcase recent research developments and explore how genomics- and biodiversity-driven approaches can be translated into sustainable conservation strategies, improved management of animal genetic resources, and informed policy decisions. By fostering evidence-based conservation frameworks and linking wildlife conservation with food security, the symposium seeks to contribute meaningfully to national biodiversity goals and long- term sustainability.
